Mobility Opportunities Via Experience (MOVE)
In May of 2010, Adult Services at the Center established a MOVE Program (Mobility Opportunities Via Experience) at the Smith Center in Guilderland, NY. This program is based on the successes of MOVE Programs offered through Clover Patch and Langan School Programs.

On November 17, 2010, there was an official dedication of the Gokhale MOVE Program in memory of Milind Gokhale, an adult program participant. A commemorative plaque is inscribed: Milind was a gentle soul with a quiet presence. He will always be remembered for his beautiful smile and joyous personality. To honor Milind’s life, the gift of the MOVE adult program will allow individuals with disabilities to get better at life as they achieve more mobility and gain independence.

In our Gokhale MOVE Program, individuals with impaired motor skills are encouraged to explore and discover new ways of movement and “getting around” their environment through motivation from trained professionals and use of specialized, adaptive equipment. Our goal is to help adults with disabilities to acquire increased mobility in sitting, standing, and transitioning, and to experience better health and enhanced personal dignity. The MOVE experience is also designed to increase participants’ independence and self-esteem in employment and day habilitation environments.
