Yankee Pitcher Joba Chamberlain makes his pitch at Telethon Joba Chamberlain, pitcher for the New York Yankees, will be the featured guest in the sports area at the 52nd Annual Center for Disability Services Telethon on Sunday, January 29. Chamberlain will sign autographs for fans from noon until 3 p.m. Baseballs and photos will be available for purchase on site. The all live, all local telethon broadcast airs on WXXA/FOX23 News (cable channel 8) and is held at the Holiday Inn Albany on Wolf Road. This week, Chamberlain agreed to a one year contract with the Yankees which will reportedly raise his salary to $1.6 million. He is currently recovering and rehabbing after elbow surgery to repair a torn ligament. A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Chamberlain played baseball for the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He was a MLB first round draft pick in 2006, and made his major league debut with the Yankees in August 2007. Chamberlain knows all about the everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities, people like the Center’s consumers. His father, Harlan, has physical disabilities and uses a motorized scooter for mobility. The New York Yankees have a large fan base in Albany and have played a major part in the Center for Disability Services Telethon for years. Past special guests include: Gaylord Perry, (the late) Ryne Duren, Rusty Torres and Frank Tepedino (2002), Goose Gossage (2003), Jorge Posada (2004), Joe Girardi (2005), Bubba Crosby (2006), Scott Proctor (2007), Shelley Duncan (2008), Brian Bruney (2009), Brett Gardner (2010), and David Robertson (2011).
